چکیده

Continuous-wave ~cw! optical gain of 1.3310 cm is obtained on a probe transition in a driven, threelevel, V-type atomic system. The atoms exhibit no population inversion between the probe excited state and the dressed ground states of the combined atom-drive Hamiltonian. This gain without population inversion is interpreted as direct evidence of quantum interference, arising from coherences established in the atom by the applied optical fields. Agreement with a simple four-level theoretical model is excellent. @S1050-2947~99!01306-2#

Optical parametric oscillators pumped by population-trapped atoms.

We describe an optical parametric oscillator that is pumped by population-trapped atoms that are prepared with maximum coherence. The oscillator is based on the use of an effective nonlinear susceptibility that is of the same order as the linear susceptibility. Because the parametric gain is obtained in a single coherence length, the gain bandwidth can exceed the degenerate frequency. In Pb vap...

Observation of atomic tunneling from an accelerating optical potential

We observe quantum tunneling of cold sodium atoms from an accelerating one-dimensional standing wave of light. Atoms are trapped in a far-detuned standing wave that is accelerated for a controlled duration. For sufficiently large values of the acceleration, we observe an exponential decay in the number of atoms that remain trapped as a function of the interaction time. We show that this loss is...

Evidence of lasing without inversion in a hot rubidium vapor under electromagnetically-induced-transparency conditions

We report a likely observation of cw lasing without inversion in a gas of hot rubidium atoms in an optical cavity under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency EIT . The medium is pumped coherently and resonantly by a single “coupling” beam which also produces EIT in the lasing transition. The steady-state intensity exhibits thresholds as a function of the atomic density and the ...

9 N ov 2 00 4 Atom Interferometry in a Vertical Optical Lattice

We have studied the interference of degenerate quantum gases in a vertical optical lattice. The coherence of the atoms leads to an interference pattern when the atoms are released from the lattice. This has been shown for a Bose-Einstein condensate in early experiments. Here we demonstrate that also for fermions an interference pattern can be observed provided that the momentum distribution sma...

Absorption-induced trapping in an anisotropic magneto-optical trap.

We report on a simple anisotropic magneto-optical trap for neutral atoms that produces a large sample of cold atoms confined in a cylindrically-shaped volume with a high aspect ratio (100:1). Due to the large number of trapped atoms, the laser beams that propagate along the optically thick axis of the trap to cool the atoms are substantially attenuated. We demonstrate that the resulting intensi...
